A raw sulfur crystal. I only handled it for a few seconds to put it in the lightbox, and then remove it - but, it sure did leave a stink on my hands!

I wish I had something good like this to show my intro geology lab students today, none of them smell our sulfur samples and didn't believe me when I told them it should...

I know the feeling. I'm wrestling with a somewhat unruly keyboard at the moment. I think the Discovery Channel's online store, or somewhere like Carolina Supply might have some crystals like this - the only strings are that you'll probably have to buy the whole kit. You could get just plain sulfur from somewhere like this [link] and there are even a few people selling mineral kits on e-bay that include sulfur.

Good call. As a semi-professional geologist, I've kind of made it a point to not buy anything in my collection (especially when I've found or have received so many good ones for free!), but I may make an exception for the sulfur for the next time I teach an introductory mineralogy lab .

Cool. I've never seen an actual sulfur crystal, and the shape is nicely defined. Cool shot.

Thanks! Like I said, I've had this thing lying around forever. Unfortunately, pieces fracture off of it really easily and, as the title implies, it does leave a bit of a stink on the skin.

You're welcome.

And it happens. Sulfur is a very delicate, and as you said, odored mineral.

I don't believe I've seen an actual crystal of sulfur like this before. Very nice!

Thanks! It actually came in one of those educational geology kits. I got it at a Discovery Channels store -ages- ago. I try not to take it out of the box very often, because pieces crumble off of it really easily - and, of course, there is the smell it leaves on skin...
