Oviposit

A beautiful female ichneumon, a close relative of wasps. She can't sting, that long thing sticking into the dead tree is an ovipositor. She has discovered wood-boring beetle larvae living inside the trunk, and will use one of their own tunnels to deposit an egg. Once it hatches, the resulting larva will parasitize the beetle grub. Ichneumons are a very important part of the ecosystem, as they keep populations of the tree-damaging boring beetles in check.
